Earth Hour 2022

History of the Hour

Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March 8.30pm – 9.30pm, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, switching off their lights to show support for our planet.

But Earth Hour goes far beyond the symbolic action of switching off – it has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.

Earth Hour is open-source and we welcome everyone, anyone, to take part and help amplify our mission to unite people to protect our planet.

Our Mission: Then and Now

In 2007, we encouraged people around the world to switch off their lights to call attention to climate change. More than a decade later, the climate crisis remains, made worse by another urgent threat: the rapid loss of biodiversity and nature.

Natural systems are vital for all our futures – and yet, the rate of global loss of nature during the past 50 years is unprecedented in human history. Nature not only provides us food, water, clean air, and other services worth over US$125 trillion a year – it is also one of our strongest allies against climate change. Protecting nature is one of the most immediate, powerful, and cost-effective solutions to the climate crisis.

Today, Earth Hour aims to increase awareness and spark global conversations on protecting nature not only to combat the climate crisis, but to ensure our own health, happiness, prosperity and even survival.

  1. Dinner in the dark (All Sections – Cook)
Whip up healthy and delicious meals that will make your taste buds tingle!
  2. Catch the lights-off moment
Find a good vantage point of your city skyline and watch the lights-off moment at 8:30 pm your local time! If you’re into photography, try some time-lapse shots!
  3. Go stargazing (All Sections – Astronomer)
When the lights are off being the best time to look up at the night sky. When we think of pollution we often forget about ‘light pollution’, where our street lights and other bright lights cause a glow that makes it harder to see the stars. You could just gaze up at the sky, and be amazed at the universe, and that would be wonderful.
  4. Take photos in the dark (All Sections – Photography)
Get your Family and friends interested in photography by trying out light painting! Long exposures and a tripod work best
  5. Board games or book readings by candle-light
Note: Our Earth Hour team will not be held responsible for any friendships ruined by a game of Monopoly
  6. Patience is a Virtue
Have a deck of cards ready and play some Patience. These games are easy to play, don’t need anyone else to play with you, and are an easy way to switch off from everything around you. When a round is done, just start another. It is not about winning, but just about playing.
  7. Learn your history (Scout Program: Advanced Scout Standard (A) Patriotism and Citizenship: Part 3)
Earth Hour is a chance to stop and think. It is also a chance to talk. You could use this time to find out what was different for your parents or grandparents when they were growing up, and what was just the same. Ask them about school, music, games, clothes, music, manners, religion and what things they got in trouble for!
  8. Camp it out (All Sections)
Option 1 – Venture Scout Young Leaders Award – Mission Task 1
Spend the night camping and around a simulated fire! (fire permits must be obtained for real fires)
  9. Organise a potluck dinner and Campfire with Friends and Relatives (All Sections) (Option 2 – Venture Scout Young Leaders Award – Mission Task 1)
Meet up and greet through a simulated campfire in your backyard
  10. Is Tik Tok Dancing your Passion? (parental consent required)
Then look no further than the Earth Hour 2022 Dance
